#1 Point Of View Linky Party: SKIRTS!

Do you remember when I announced the fun new thing called Point of View? If you missed it you can read about it HERE.

It is time for all of us to reveal our skirts and for YOU to link up yours :) Now remember, it doesn't have to be a skirt you just made for this specifically. You can link up any skirt as long as you made it. I love that there is a whole polka dot love fest going on! And I love that Michelle made a BED skirt. Such a clever take on the theme.

Before we get to the linky I wanted to share a quick tutorial on how I made mine. Now, I did not pick this theme. Any of you who have been following me for awhile know that I DO NOT sew well. My repertoire consists of square(ish) pillows and crooked hems. Sooooooooo, this was a stretch for me. I thought about how I could do it with the absolute minimum amount of sewing possible. So here is how I did it:

I bought a few yards of cream colored fabric. I have no clue what kind it is. Cotton? (I am telling you, I don't sew....) I ripped it into two pieces. One for the waist band and the other for the bottom of the skirt. I planned on having the folded pretty part being the top and the bottom so this way I wouldn't have to hem anything. I only had to sew the two pieces together.

Here is the desk I refinished back in October. I put it to good use as my temporary sewing table. And here is my beginners sewing machine out of hibernation.

I pinned the two pieces together and pleated as I did. I probably should have made the pleats smaller but I had no clue and was just making it up as I went. I eye balled it at about 2 inches apart.

And here they are all joined together.

Now while it was all laid out I added the circles. I figured it was easier this way so I could see the whole bottom. I used my Silhouette and the Silhouette fabric interfacing to cut out the circles. If you don't have a Silhouette, circles would be easy to trace and cut out. You could then use that iron on fabric fusing stuff (really dude, I don't know anything about sewing...). I used pins to hold the circles in place until I could iron them on.
Now I need to point something out here. In my blissful sewing ignorance I thought I could just iron these bad boys on and Voila! be done. Uuuuuh. That would be a "no". In the fine print it says "If you plan on washing the item you will need to stitch the fabric on." So I will either never wash my skirt OR it will sit in my craft closet for a LOOOOONG time unfinished. Now for you this would probably be no big deal.

I am going to let you in on a little secret. In the picture of me wearing this skirt in my Silhouette giveaway post, it is totally safety pinned on. I haven't sewn the zipper part yet. I had a crap load of stuff to do this week to prepare for a BIG event and I just didn't have the time to do something I knew I would probably struggle with. Just one more reason this will probably sit in my craft closet.....
Well thanks for humoring me by checking out my sad excuse of a sewing tutorial.I hope next months theme is more up my ally.

  1. Amen on the sewing girl! Thus, my no sew "skirt." Ha ha, we are two peas in a pod! You are brave to attempt pleats, I have so not gone down that road yet. The dots are cute. You could just sew an X over them so you don't have to attempt sewing a circle. Or even a star burst would be cute, it might make it look like a flower of sorts. Lots of the stuff out there is a bit abstract right now anyway. :)

  8. Lol! I find it comical when I attempt sewing (and I have been a lot lately). It's HORRIBLE, but I often don't care cause I'm just so excited to have a finished project. Your skirt is awesome! I really want to try making something for myself soon. I love this post cause there's tons of great ideas out there. Thank you!
